On 29th March Woolworths’ customers were offered orange ribbons along with the Harmony day message by Girl Guides from the Coonabarabran Waratah and Gumnut Guides and Lone Guide units. The Guides, Guide leaders and parents hosted a barbeque out the front with ingredients supplied by the Coonabarabran Woolworth.
Harmony Day is about bringing people together to celebrate Australia's community harmony, participation and cultural diversity.
By belonging to the largest international organization for girls and young women, Guides are in a unique position to understand and appreciate the aims of this very important day. Harmony Day is a day to acknowledge and value the diversity of our communities, to recognize our successes, to celebrate multiculturalism, to understand the challenges ahead, and to unite to meet those challenges together. Guiding is for all girls and women regardless of culture, race, colour, creed or language. Guiding teaches girls to have a greater understanding of ourselves, to appreciate our gifts and talents, and to develop self respect. We will then have respect and understanding for others and appreciate their differences and diversity.
During regular meetings Guides get the opportunity to learn about the world we live in and different cultures. Emma Starr, who had recently visited and worked in Bangladesh, has spoken with the Waratah Guides and shared her experiences and cultural practices that she discovered in her travels. Of particular fascination to the girls were henna tattoos and how to dress in a sari where the girls actually had a ‘hands on’ or should I say ‘feet in’ experience. The Waratahs came away with beautiful temporary Henna tattoos on their feet. More recently Margaret Mack shared photos and items from her recent trip to South America with the guides. We extend a thank you to both Emma and Margaret for sharing their experiences with the Guides.
Funds raised from the Harmony Day barbeque will go towards activities to promote leadership, world understanding and teamwork amongst the Guides. On Tuesday afternoon Gumnut Guide, Jasmine Evans, presented the Manager of Coonabarabran’s Woolworths supermarket with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Local Girl Guide units. Thanks again to Woolworths, their staff and patrons who supported the Girl Guides in this event.
